So, I have an extraordinary amount of storage in my basement under my stairs. The majority of it hasn’t been looked at in nearly 20 years. Several months ago I got the feeling that I should pull out said boxes and take a look at the contents to see how they are fairing, and it’s a good thing I did.
You see, the freezing and thawing that happens in our Province of Saskatchewan created moisture which dripped down the cement walls and seeped it’s way into the cardboard boxes thus creating mold in some cases and an unpleasant putrid smell. Many shirts and sweaters were ruined and some other keepsakes. So I pulled out all the boxes into my wide open basement (I’d say there were at least 40), and proceeded to go through every item in every box to determine what could be saved and what had to go and then I purchased a couple dozen plastic totes and transferred the items into the totes after washing any saved clothing items and placing them into plastic bags. Same for stuffed toys and miscellaneous items I felt extra precious about.
Then came the paperwork. You know, old bills, letters, postcards, Christmas cards, Birthday cards, diaries, you name it…old income tax returns. Yadda yadda and two months later, I got through it all. Just TODAY. That was JUST the paper items. Everything else took me another month. I’m happy to say I threw out 6 boxes of just paper stuff!
So one thing I didn’t mention is in order to get to the boxes of storage, I had to pull out everything that was being stored in front of the storage. LOL. Like costumes, Christmas decorations, Halloween decorations, party supplies, wrapping paper, curtains, jars, and more! So my basement is a literal disaster. It looks like we are hoarders. So for the next couple of weeks you can guess what I will be doing. Yup. Getting my basement back in order. But I’m sure looking forward to having our living space back I tell ya! I’m sure the rest of the family feels the same way.
